What is the Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) designation?
The AFC is offered through AFCPE (the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education). AFCPE is the leader in financial counseling, and the AFC designation is the most comprehensive and well-respected financial counseling designation in the field.
“AFC® certification is the standard — training professionals to guide clients through life-cycle financial education to help them realize their goals and achieve lasting financial well-being.” (http://afcpe.org/certification-center/accredited-financial-counselor)
How do I become an AFC?
Becoming an AFC is a 4-step process:
- Complete an education program. You have several options to complete this step – through coursework, independent study or by challenging the exam.
- Pass the AFC exam. The exam is offered at AMP testing centers. The test has 165 multiple-choice questions and you have a three hour time limit.
- Complete 1,000 hours of counseling experience.
- Sign and agree to the AFC Code of Ethics.
My AFC designation has served me just as much as my CFP® designation. The AFC helps you learn how to work with clients from all walks of life to manage their everyday finances.
